“Can you transform this structure into a sustainable stay-cation space, all within a tight budget?” our client asked, envisioning The Octagon as a sustainable Bed and Breakfast.
The Octagon , as the name suggests is an eight sided stone structure , amidst lush greenery located on the outskirts of Bangalore. It is a double height space with a beautiful verandah, offsetting it. The Octagon is the standing replica of The Garden of Meditation found in the Theosophical Society of India, built by Mr. Vira Raghavan, IAS (Retd.) and his wife Girija Vira Raghavan.
The designers at Saavi got thinking and mood boarding to develop interesting and achievable concepts that would bring life to this space. Sustainable, Warm and Welcoming is what The Octagon is all about. Let’s look at the challenges from Saavi’s perspective.
We began by understanding the exact requirements of our audience through intensive research and interviews with a variety of travellers who enjoy spending time at nature-friendly stays. Now that we were thoroughly aware of our target audience, the next step was to begin conceptualising and defining the colour and material palettes.
Sustainability here was not only achieved through the use of eco-friendly materials and methods, but also by an efficient use of the space through multi-functional furniture and diverse uses of the same areas. For example, the height of the space was utilised by building a mezzanine floor. Also, through greenery and natural light, a beautiful connection was created between the exterior and interior of the space, inviting warmth, comfort, and peace.
While bringing The Octagon to life, we were focused on designing and achieving the entire concept and experience at an affordable price. Building construction and materials are one of the highest contributors towards creating a high impact on the environment and through our design and concept, we wanted to take a step towards a sustainable future.
By being cognizant of our client’s requirements during our design process, we were able to devise multiple methods to achieve our vision with utmost quality:
Right Resourcing: Doing our research to source the right materials and being conscious while selecting our vendors, who are also making an effort towards adapting sustainability
Multipurpose Mapping: By understanding our space thoroughly we were able to increase functionality and efficiency by creating versatile furniture.
Temperature Tactics: By directing natural light and ventilation within the stone structure, we were able to avoid using the AC to maintain ambient temperature of The Octagon. Additionally, using different textures and textiles within the space, we were able to increase functionality, warmth, and comfort.
Beneficial Botany: By using plants to connect the outdoors and indoors we effectively opened up the space and also improved the air quality. Additionally, we chose plants native to the area that naturally help avoid mosquitos, and some that have a natural scent, hence making the space more welcoming and sustainable.
Calming Chimes: The natural melody of wind chimes in the space invites positive vibes thus increasing the overall peace. It is said that being surrounded by natural elements and sounds has a calming effect and helps in creating a healthy environment.
Many say that “Sustainability is very expensive”. Through critical design centred thinking, creativity, and learning from our roots — The team at Saavi was able to actualise that sustainability in design can be achieved without breaking the bank and The Octagon is their standing proof.
